 The Sacred Mountain

Like Olympus of Old, the residence of the gods, Mount Royal is the birthplace of a country New France, now Canada. Majestic mountain, Mount Royal now reigns over a city spreading at its feet, Montreal.   First visited by a Breton explorer, Jacques Cartier seeking a route to India, this 43 years after Chritopher Columbus, the mountain then aroused the admiration of the discoverer. At awe at the panorama then offered, Cartier baptised the moutain Mount Royal, this in honor of his king as was the custom then. Today this unique mountain, Mount Royal, is revered as the birthplace of the country, Canada.

       Montreal, now a Metropolis

This mountain, Mount Royal, has given birth to a city, now a metropolis, Montreal. Following Cartier, the island of Mount Royal here and there developed. In 1611, Samuel de Champlain, the founder of Quebec, chose the place of a future colony, Place Royale. Four years later, a first mass is said on Des-Prairies river by a Recollet father. Then follows the drowning of another Recollet, Nicolas Viel, this in the rapids of the same river. With time, the island transformed its name: Mount Real and finally Montreal with its occupants calling themselves 'montreallais'. In 1642, a colony takes place: Ville-Marie. In 1833, a city is finally incorporated. Its name? That by which the island is then known: Montreal.

AMONG SOME OF THE REASONS FAVORING THIS SACRED MOUNTAIN

MOUNT ROYAL, THIS SACRED MOUNTAIN IS THE BIRTH PLACE OF CANADA. This Sacre Mountain is in fact the bithplace of Canada, then New-France. As such, it is the most important place in Canada.

HOCHELAGA WAS DRAWN ON THE MODEL OF NEW TOWNS AT THE RENAISSANCE - Hochelaga was drawn on the model of New Towns at the Renaissance. The new towns were usually fortified against armed attacks. Today, the new town of PalmaNova (1593) built by Venice on its northern frontier gives us a good model.

THE 3 HILLS OF MOUNT ROYAL ARE EXACTLY REPRODUCED BY THE PLAN "LA TERRA DE HOCHELA" PUBLISHED BY G.B. RAMUSIO -This in fact a most valuable aspect of the history of that mountain.

MOUNT ROYAL IS THE BIRTHPLACE OF MONTREAL. It predates some one hundred and seven years the (implantation) of Ville-Marie. Following the coming of Cartier, development occured in different places, especially on Des-Prairies river. The island successively took the name of Mount Royal, of Mount Real and finally Montreal. When a city was incorporated, it took the name of the island, Montréal.

THE DOCUMENTS PUBLISHED IN 1556 BY VENICE ALL CONFORMS TO THE MEMOIR OF CARTIER, NOTWITHSTANDING ITS MANY INCONGRUITIES.
